Shepherds Dene Christian Retreat House in Riding Mill, Northumberland is the official retreat house for the Diocese of Durham and Newcastle and as such has a ‘parish’ that extends north to Berwick-upon-Tweed, across to the Cheviots and Pennines and south to the Cleveland Hills. The house was built in the arts and crafts style, gifted to the church in 1945 by the Newells and has a palpable sense of peace and tranquility. As well as hosting regular faith-based activities, the house welcomes secular groups and individuals who come to join a wide range of workshops and residential courses.
Shepherds Dene is well-loved and well-used, but with rising maintenance costs and an objective to increase income, was looking to increase paying guests and visitors, especially outside of peak times, without affecting their core Christian community.
Our brief was to help Shepherds Dene to increase revenue and explore new markets, products or services that would attract paying, residential customers to the house. Drawing on my travel and tourism background I worked with Shepherds Dene to develop their Marketing Strategy, Tourism Product Development to the groups market and a Website Refresh, along with Social Media Set Up and Training.
Branding and design by r//evolution and the website development by Tourism Doctor.
Tourism product design was developed in partnership with Jan Williams, Blue Badge Guide.
